Administrative HistoryThe Kirk family had been in Chapel-en-le-Frith since the 17th century. They were in the iron manufacturing trade for several generations, before Henry and Thomas Kirk established their own business in 1770. In the 19th century the business moved from Barmoor Clough to Town End until the family relinquished the business in 1880.

Henry and Thomas' elder brother, Peter, established an ironworks originally in Stockport, Cheshire, and later moved the business to Workington, Cumbria

The members of the family who remained in the High Peak made their money largely out of farming. The family also became prominent members of the Methodist community in Chapel-en-le-Frith.
Custodial HistoryThese papers were donated to Derbyshire Record Office in April 2007.
