DescriptionEstate accounts including records of Bateman's land and properties in the Youlgreave area, with names of tenants and descriptions of properties. The volume also contains accounts of various investments, charitable donations etc. Folio 4 relates to his son William Bateman (1787-1835), antiquary, and includes references to the costs of, amongst other things, his book purchases. William was the father of Thomas Bateman (d. 1861), archaeologist and antiquary, mentioned on folio 115, which gives details of his school fees and other expenses.

This volume is the only series of estate records for known to survive.

Administrative HistoryThomas Bateman (d. 1847) was a Manchester cotton merchant who purchased an estate at Middleton by Youlgreave when he retired. His son William (1787-1835) was antiquary, as was his son Thomas (d. 1861), also an archaeologist. Both are mentioned in these accounts.
