| Administrative History | Seymour Sydney Hyde Stanhope succeeded to the title Earl of Harrington as a minor on the death of his father, the 5th Earl, in 1862. A Chancery case ensued, between the 6th Earl as plaintiff represented by the Duke of Leinster, and his mother Elizabeth nee Williams, Countess of Harrington (m 1831 d 1898) as defendant. The 6th Earl of Harrington died unmarried at the age of 20 on 22 February 1866 and the succession passed to a cousin, Charles William Stanhope (1809-81), who became 7th Earl of Harrington. Thomas Smith Woolley was the receiver of the Harrington estates in Derbyshire, Cheshire, Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire. |
