| Administrative History | The Farley Congregational Church originated by the efforts of the Reverend Edwin Clarke, who had formerly exercised his ministry at Matlock Bank, and was also chaplain at Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment, also in Matlock Bank. In 1902 (a year before his death) he realised the need for a place of worship in Farley. A room was duly opened for public worship and he acted as honorary pastor until his death in 1903. Numbers of people attending worship steadily rose, and it was recognised that there was a growing need for a more fitting site for people to attend services. A convenient site was secured on 11 June 1898, and the new church at Farley Hill was opened in 1903 by Mr Charles Wall Edge of London (who had lived in Farley as a child), who also generously donated the sum of £700.
The church at Farley was formally constituted on 22 Nov 1903 when about a dozen people formed themselves into a church. The church is now closed (2005). |
