| Description | These records relate to the relocation of the Accountant General's Department of the Post Office at Chetwynd House, West Bars, Chesterfield. Until the Second World War, the department was located in London. After the war it became more scattered, with sections situated in buildings at Harrogate and at Bickley in Kent. It was later decided that a considerable part of the department, including the Harrogate and Bickley contingents, should be moved to Chesterfield. This process began in 1958 when the Post Office had to design and build an office of some 200,000 square feet to house 1600 staff. The building was eventually opened in November 1963, being named after George Chetwynd, the head of the Accountant General's Department from 1864 to 1882. This collection consists primarily of correspondence relating to the construction of the building, but also copies of title deeds, plans and a souvenir programme. |
