Administrative History | The Gisbornes were a long-established and distinguished Derby family, members of whom served as Mayors and Members of Parliament, as well as in other official capacities.
This group of family correspondence chiefly relates to John Gisborne, 1770-1851. He married Millicent Pole of Radbourne and the couple had a large family. Two sons who died young, Frederic (1797-1818) and Charles are represented in these letters.
Emma Gisborne, another child of John and Millicent, married the Rev Henry Nixon in 1834 and this family are also represented in letters.
John Gisborne (1770-1851) is said to have composed his first poem, ' The Vale of Wever' in 1792 and he continued to write verse and memoirs throughout his life. He was instrumental in raising funds, 1815-1818, for the first church to be built in Blackpool.
This series also includes 20th century notes and correspondence on the Sorocold family of Derby. |
