Description | Title deeds and conveyances dating largely from the 19th and 20th centuries, relating to the purchase of land in Hathersage and the Hope Valley, Bradwell and Little Hucklow, Derbyshire, by the Shuttleworth family of Hathersage (and Nether) Halls.
Deeds relate to several generations of the Shuttleworth family, including Major Ashton Ashton Shuttleworth (b 1754), John Spencer Ashton Shuttleworth (b 1817), Colonel Ashton John Shuttleworth (b 1840), Major Ashton Ashton Shuttleworth (b 1878), and John Ashton Shuttleworth (b 1918). |
Administrative History | Hathersage Hall passed from the Eyre family of Padley to Robert Ashton sometime before his death in 1687, and later from his younger son Benjamin to William Spencer of Cannon Hall, Yorkshire. The estate came to the Shuttleworth family through the marriage of Christina, eldest daughter and heiress of William Spencer, to Captain William Shuttleworth (1710-1830).
A new hall, Nether Hall, was built c. 1840 for J. S. A. Shuttleworth. By the 20th century, this house was let, the tenants including Thomas Norton Longman, Walter Shirley Davy (1920s), F. C. Fairholme (1930s) and W. J. Wigney (1940s), amongst others. The old Hall was used by the Shuttleworth's as a residence, but was in the tenancy of James Lomax Cockayne in the 1920s. Hathersage Hall was put up for sale in 1983. |
