Administrative HistoryBriggs was born in Kings Newton, near Melbourne, Derbyshire, in 1819. After attending schools in Wymeswold, Leicestershire and Darley, Derbyshire, he was apprenticed to W. Bemrose & Sons, printers of Derby. III health forced him to leave his apprenticeship and he spent the rest of his life in Kings Newton.
He acquired a considerable reputation as a naturalist and antiquarian, contributing articles to local and national newspapers and journals, as well as publishing books on natural and local history and poetry.
