Administrative History | Methodism was introduced to Heanor in 1797 by a minister who walked from Nottingham and preached in the square on Hands Road.
The Free Methodists broke away from the Wesleyan Methodists at Heanor in 1849, and began meeting for worship at a house on Derby Road. Land on Mount Street was purchased by the Wesleyan Reform Connexion in 1855 for the sum of £45. The church was built and opened for worship by 1858, and incorporated the Sunday School rooms. A primary room was added in 1933. An organ was installed in the church on the upper floor in the 1890s. This was renovated in 1947. Alterations were carried out in 1912 to enclose the staircase of the two-storey building, and to provide a foyer. A new Communion area was dedicated in 1956, with a new pulpit added two years later. In 1972, it was decided that the Market Street and Mount Street Churches should unite, using the Market Street premises and selling the Mount Street Church. |
