Administrative History | The modern County Courts were established under an Act of 1846 intended to create courts for the easier recovery of small debts. Successive Acts added considerably to the County Courts' powers of jurisdiction.
Trade Directories describe Belper as head of a County Court district until 1887 and as head of Belper and Ilkeston from 1891 until 1925. In 1928, Belper is said to be in the Derby County Court District. Ilkeston was described as lying within Belper County Court district from 1881, but by 1925 was said to be head of the Ilkeston "side" of Belper and Ilkeston County Court. In 1928 it was said to be head of a County Court District.
The Ilkeston County Court was closed in February 1996 and its business transferred to Nottingham Combined Court.
The Belper Court's area of jurisdiction included Ambergate, Belper, Coxbench, Duffield, Hazelwood, Heage, Holbrooke, Makeney, Milford, Morley, Turnditch and originally those places which later came under the jurisdiction of the Ilkeston Court (see below). The Ilkeston Court's area of jurisdiction included Awsworth (Nottinghamshire) Cotmanhay, Dale Abbey, Denby Common, Eastwood, Heanor, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse, Ilkeston, Kilburne, Kirk Hallam, Langley Mill, Little Hallam, Loscoe, Mapperley, Marlpool, Shipley, Smalley, Stanley and Stanley Common, Stanton by Dale. |
Custodial History | These records were transferred to Derbyshire Record Office under the Public Records Act by the clerk of Ilkeston County Court at the time the court closed in February 1996. |
